new york fashion week streetstyle

In case you don't happen to be as obsessed as I am and didn't know, New York Fashion Week started yesterday. What's on the runways is great, but even more interesting is what the people attending the shows wear, and for that, we have streetstyle blogs. Here are the ones I'll be keeping tabs on for the next month (after NYFW comes London Fashion Week, then Milan, then Paris...)

In 2005 (yes, I know exactly when it was), I remember saying to my then-boyfriend/now-husband: "There's this website, and it's just pictures of people on the street in New York - it's like being able to people-watch in New York without being there!" That was The Sartorialist, and since then, he's gone on to spawn dozens of imitators along with a huge career and two books.

Garance Doré  is the girlfriend of Scott Schumann (a.k.a. The Sartorialist) - they actually met while taking streetstyle photos. She's an adorably French and seemingly down-to-earth (judging by her video series) illustrator and photographer. I especially like this recent post about how many fashion bloggers now have unattainable wardrobes and lifestyles, defeating the purpose of why people first started following them. We have Vogue if we want to see unattainable.

Speaking of Vogue, if you'd like to see images from the runway while a show is happening, style.com (Vogue's website) is the place to go. It's also where to see streetstyle pics by Tommy Ton, the photographer behind the Jak and Jil streetstyle blog.

Vanessa Jackman, Candice Lake, and Tamu Mcpherson are lovely ladies who end up both behind (as streetstyle photographers) and in front (as creatively dressed fashionistas) of the camera.

No one needs to emulate a model's physical attributes, but they often have some of the most effortlessly cool style on the street.  Craig Arend from Altamira has the goods on their off-duty style.

The man who did streetstyle first is Bill Cunningham, who still (after 40+ years) writes his weekly column, On the Street, for the New York Times. Even if you care nothing about fashion, you should see the documentary about him, Bill Cunningham New York - he's a really fascinating character, on many different levels. My favorite fact about him is that although he often photographs elite members of society, his uniform (the blue cotton jacket seen above) is what French laborers wear and which he buys at a hardware store.

Will you be keeping track of any of the outfits on the street this September?
