a don't + dressing proportionately

a don't + dressing proportionately

As much as I usually post outfit pics that I feel good in, there are still those days when I feel hugely pregnant and when I try things that just don't work. For this particular night out, I really wanted to layer leather and faux fur. I thought my top layers might look good with a (non-maternity) H&M midi dress that I had picked up at Avalon Exchange with some store credit I got from selling clothes. They did not. So, I'm putting my vanity aside to show you why.

I was curious to see how the dress actually looked on me, so I took a few photos just to see. As you can tell, not great. The midi length is near impossible to pull off if you're not a supermodel, and the low, slouchy boot is not helping to elongate me at all. In general, black is great for hiding a bump, but in this case, I actually wanted more attention on the bump to distract from my hips. Don't laugh, this is actually one of the best aspects of being pregnant, people totally focus on your stomach and for once, it's ok! You can eat as much as you want and not have to worry about sucking it in, and any other flaws you might think you have fade into the background.

After I added my leather/fur layers (which I love!), the proportions were definitely off. If you think of your body as divided into three equal parts from top to bottom (Tim Gunn explains it here), you can see how the middle third of my body is much longer than either the top of bottom, which isn't pleasing to the eye. Also, the skirt of the dress reads as a straight-up-and-down rectangle, instead of tapering towards the knee, which would streamline the look. Again, if I'd worn higher heels, the proportion would have been slightly better, but still not great.

At this point, the light was gone, I had already put away my tripod, but I was still trying to make it work. I just started taking photos in my bedroom mirror - excuse the quality.

To try to address the proportion issue, I hiked that bad boy up to above my knees. Nope, still not feeling good.

In the end, I fell back on something in my comfort zone, skinny black jeans and a higher wedge heel. The proportions are right here: 1/3 is my top, 2/3 are from the waist on down. Pregnancy in particular is one of those times that you just want to feel content and confident with what you're wearing. Really, we all want to feel good in what we wear, and sometimes it takes a few do-overs (it happens to the best of us - see my last "don't" here). All you can do is learn from it (taking photos, even just on your iPhone, helps to see the issue) and move on! No beating ourselves up here.

Do you think about proportions when you're getting dressed? Have you had days where you needed do-overs? What did you learn?

what i wore: wedding guest

All summer, I knew that I had a wedding to go to at the end of August. For some reason, I had in my head that I needed a new dress for said wedding. What is it about special events that makes us think we need something new?  I kept my eyes out all summer for something appropriate, but nothing presented itself. A few days before the wedding, I realized that I actually already had a new dress that I hadn't even worn yet - a purchase from Zara during my birthday month shopping

Because I'd mentally categorized this dress as just something for nights out and because I'd gotten stuck in this "I need a dress specifically for that wedding" mentality, I hadn't really paid enough attention to what I already owned that could be used for other purposes. I don't know if this is making sense, but it's all just to say that it's important to keep an open mind about everything in your closet.

However I worked my way around to the solution, I ended up happy with my outfit. The H&M metallic belt made a reappearance, as did the B. Makowsky shoes from Marshall's. In all, this outfit actually only cost about $75, not bad. I will add that this was an evening wedding in a downtown hotel - this look wouldn't have really been appropriate for an outdoor garden wedding (but I bet I have something in my closet that would be, if I just looked!) One last thought - before I had a blog, I could wear an outfit multiple times with different groups of people and no one would be the wiser - if you see this one again in person, just pretend you haven't before ;)

Have you ever realized you already had what you needed for a special occasion?

More mindful closet on FacebookTwitter, and Pinterest.

Oh, and please vote for me in the St. Louis Fashion Blogger Awards!!

Last Friday, I attended the St. Louis Fashion Blogger Award nominations, hosted by ALIVE magazine at Craft Alliance in Grand Center.  Looking for a little sartorial inspiration, I jumped on Pinterest and saw this image on my style board:

It reminded me that I actually hadn't worn my metallic belt that I was so excited about since May (here). I decided to try it with white instead of black and paired it with a thrifted Forever 21 peplum top, H&M pencil skirt and thrifted sandals.

And guess what? I was nominated for "Best Writing" and "Best Fashion Blog"! Thanks to the people who nominated me (whoever you are!) - I was so surprised.  It was also nice to meet many of my fellow fashion bloggers (like Pysche, Julia, Lindsay, Sarah, Marisa, and Samantha) in person for the first time - they are all such sweet, friendly girls.

Don't forget, there's more mindful closet on facebook (like the page for updates!) and twitter - and I recently gave in to Instagram too...

mindful purchases: trench and blouse

mindful purchases: trench and blouse

I crossed several things off of my wish list this month. Two that I've been wearing non-stop since buying are my new trench coat and white blouse.

The trench coat is from the Gap. It was $80 and I had $20 in rewards from my Gap credit card.  (here with H&M blouse, James jeans and Target wedges)

When I'm deciding on a purchase, I usually take a photo to help me decide (I turn off the sound on my phone so people don't hear camera noises coming from my dressing room!). This isn't the most flattering pic of me, but the coat looks great, so it was a yes.

The other piece I can't stop wearing is this silky white blouse from H&M ($24). Seriously, I have worn this same outfit at least 5 times over the last two weeks with different shoes and jewelry. It's simple, I feel good in it, so why not? In case you missed it, that's how the French do it!

Since I'm sharing, here's the dressing room pic of the blouse.

Do you have any new items you can't get enough of?

Ever since I saw this photo on Pinterest, I've wanted a belt with a metallic plate
(hmm, that sounds weird).

(apparently I pinned this image without going through a website and cannot find the source - if anyone knows it, please let me know!)

I first ordered this one from Zara (no longer available), but decided that it was too narrow.

Last week, I walked into H&M to return this shirt. I had bought it along with a classic white blouse. The white blouse was on my wish list (and I've already worn it multiple times), but this top was just an impulse buy. Here was my thought process: the red trim at the neckline gives it more interest than just a plain black top, it'll be cool for wearing during the summer, and it's only $10. Especially after my post about fast fashion, I recognized that these were not good reasons for a purchase. I have plenty of black tops and a few red necklaces that would give me a similar look.

I swear, I was trying not to let anything in the store catch my eye as I walked to the counter to make my return, but there it was, the metallic belt I'd been looking for!

I'm excited to have something to spice up my rotation of black. I'll probably copy the look above to start with, but here are some other inspirations:

I'll make sure to post photos when I wear it! Anyone else out there love this look?

i might need this...

to go with my simple summer dresses (see below)! Perfect for the beach, throw in your towel, a magazine, and some sunscreen and you're good to go. Now do I really need it? Of course not, but isn't it a step up from the reusable shopping bag I normally use as a beach bag?
