top three from the 2015 met gala

The Oscars of the fashion world happened last night, the Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. These are my favorite looks:

Keri Russell in Altuzarra (I'm obsessed with her and have been since Felicity, seriously need to do a style icon post on her), Georgia May Jagger in Gucci, and Bee Shaffer (Anna Wintour's daughter) in Alexander McQueen.

met gala 2013: the good, the bad, and the boring

met gala 2013: the good, the bad, and the boring

If you were following me on Twitter last night, you know that last night was the Met Gala, otherwise known as the Oscars of fashion. The exhibition which opened last night at the Metropolitan Museum's Costume Institute is titled "Punk: Chaos to Couture" and most attendees attempted to incorporate the year's theme into their ensemble. Here are my picks for best, worst, and just confusing from the red carpet last night.

Let's start with the bad news, shall we?

Beyonce in Givenchy: Beyonce was Honorary Chair of the event and was wearing Ricardo Tischy (one of the co-chairs) of Givenchy's dress, but it just looks like a bad 80's nylon windbreaker

Coco Rocha in Ungaro: oh Coco, I love you so. But fake bangs and a dress that would be at home on a drag show runway? You're killing me.

Kim Kardashian in Givenchy: One of the big suspenses of the night was whether Kim K would be allowed to attend (there have been rumors that Anna Wintour swore she'd never let the Kardashians grace the pages of Vogue, but Ms. Wintour does love Kanye. Kanye is Kim's baby daddy, so...) and if so, what she'd wear since she's pregnant. I am one of the rare people who actually likes Kim Kardashian, but this was such an epic fail. It reminded me of this scene in Garden State:

Gywneth Paltrow in Valentino: has she learned nothing from her previous pink dress failures? It wasn't terrible, but certainly nothing punk about it.

Ivanka Trump in god-knows-what: she looks like the Barbie version of punk: "Maybe if I just add some colored hair clip-ins to my work outfit I'll look edgy!"

Allison Williams from Girls in Altuzarra: props for getting outside of your classic pretty girl look, but it just didn't work.

A few disappointments from usually safe bets:

Kirsten Dunst in Louis Vuitton: meh. Not flattering

Nicole Richie: the dress is from Topshop, that's cool. The hair looks like she has a treatment mask on it and didn't wash it out.

Katy Perry in Dolce and Gabbana: Not only is it odd, it's horribly unflattering to Ms. Perry's divine curves.

Lena Dunham in Erdem: not bad, just a little safe? Disappointing after last year's stellar debut.

Solange Knowles in Kenzo: I love Solange's style, and I even like it here, it just seems out of place, more of a kicking it on the beach in the Carribean vibe, instead of a hardcore art/fashion event vibe.

Miley Cyrus in Marc Jacobs: I don't really feel strongly one way or the other about Miley's look, I just find the desperate attempt to transition from a Disney star to a hard core rebel kindof sad.

Finally! Here's the good stuff! Best of the Met Gala:

Rooney Mara in Givenchy: Rooney continues to make us believe she is actually Lisbeth Salander in real life. Whatever works, and this works.

Miranda Kerr in Michael Kors: Workin' it.

Minka Kelly in Carolina Herrera: Different, but I like it - the purple over pink, the high neck.

Giuliana Rancic in Falguni-Shane: Think what you will about Mrs. Bill Rancic, but her red carpet skills (yeah, I guess they do exist) were sorely missed last night - some of the most awkward interviewing ever. This dress, from a new-to-me designer is gorgeous. I'm a sucker for geometric beading and details. Great shape, love the high neckline and the interesting-yet-not-too-unflattering texture on the hips.

Taylor Swift in J. Mendel: I like the geometric cutouts and embellishments - it's edgy without being too out of character.

Donatella Versace in Versace: yes, I know she's hard to look at, but the dress is great, love the studded and spiked shoulder.

Cameron Diaz in Stella McCartney: Simple, almost severe, gorgeous color and the dangerous-looking spiked belt is just enough punk.

Kate Bosworth in Balmain: Balmain can do no wrong, and this hot pink is a nice departure from the usual black. Olivier Rousteing has done a great job continuing the vibe Christophe Decarnin set there. I love the belt. I would wear this in a heartbeat.

Sienna Miller in Burberry: Really perfect. Tough studded leather over a long dress - we should all re-wear our wedding dresses like this!

And the best interpretation of punk and best moment of the night goes to...

SJP's incredible Philip Treacy mohawk headpiece and Jennifer Lawrence's inability to not touch.

I recently read Betty Halbreich's book Secrets of a Fashion Therapist - I checked it out from the library since it's out of print, but apparently it will be re-released soon. There was great advice throughout - I've adopted the phrase "sale brain". Accessible personal shopping appears to be on the rise, according to the Wall Street Journal - here's hoping I'm part of the trend.

The best red carpet of the year, the Met Gala, is happening tonight! As Bridget Jones would say, I'm v. v. excited. Popsugar has a roundup of some past memorable looks.

Sometimes I miss living in New York, where you could do some serious shopping on the walk to work or on your lunch break. The neighborhood I work in now has none of that, which is probably a good thing for my budget - but a traveling fashion truck? In St. Louis? That I could get behind! I'm following Rack + Clutch on Facebook and Twitter so I can keep tabs on their location - who wants to come with? Here's an article from the Post-Dispatch about Emily Ponath's fashion truck.

This image is just some eye candy - but it actually reminds me of the best dress Stanley had in his final Project Runway show - anyone else out there as obsessed with this show, even after 11 seasons, as I am?
