it's happening...

it's happening...

...I'm getting to the point where none of my clothes fit anymore. It usually takes me a week or so to get around to posting my outfits, and something crazy has happened since I took these photos. Or maybe it's just the black dress.

These photos were taken when I was about 34 and a half weeks pregnant. I don't feel  much different, but when I look at photos taken in the week since, I look so much bigger. It actually surprised me to see it. On top of that, overnight I've become extremely uncomfortable in clothes. Basically, I don't want anything touching my skin. My maternity jeans don't fit anymore, ditto for pants, and I'm down to 2 or 3 dresses that fit and I don't feel horrible in. It's funny, I was sailing right along, thinking, "oh, this whole pregnancy thing is easy!" and then this hit. Isn't that what always happens when you think you've got everything figured out? I have a feeling I'll be putting my minimalist wardrobe philosophy to the test in these next 4-6 weeks, trying to work with the same few articles of clothing that still fit.

Back to the outfit - I wore this to speak to a Moms of Toddlers group about easy ways to be stylish while chasing after little ones. It was a fun group to work with, and I'll turn my presentation into a blog post at some point. The dress is from Old Navy (also worn here and various other times), the cropped trench is from H&M several years ago, the scarf is from Target, and the boots are old Nine West.

You'll have to stay tuned for the extra large belly photos. In the meantime, any advice for me?

Trench coat weather is my favorite weather. It's so easy, because I can wear something super simple underneath...

Good lord, look at that belly!

...and throw the jacket on top and feel completely put-together.

A little trick if you'd like to wear your trench coat open but still want a defined shape - gather it a little with the belt and tie it behind you:

Of course, tying in front always look good too.

I got this trench at Ann Taylor LOFT last season (worn here pre-pregnancy) and had to hunt it down since it was sold out online - I'm glad I did. I'm also wearing my trusty thrifted Indigo Blue maternity jeans, an H&M tee found at Avalon Exchange, and thrifted Old Navy flats. I carried the bag I've been carrying all winter, the Linea Pelle Dylan. It was my anniversary gift from my husband (don't worry, I used a promo code and got 20% off) and it's turned out to be pretty much perfect. It goes with everything, can be casual or worn to a fancy restaurant, and has room for all the crap I regularly stuff it with.

weekend trip packing

weekend trip packing

Last weekend, I had the chance to visit both of my sisters in Atlanta. We had a great time, did lots of shopping, and ate so much good food. (If you're in Atlanta or planning to visit, we ate at Fritti, Leon's Full Service, and Two Urban Licks, and I would recommend them all) I always want to pack lightly, but especially didn't want to lug around a heavy suitcase in my current state. I traveled on a Friday morning and returned on Monday afternoon.

similar, but not all exact pieces I own

It was still chilly in both St. Louis and (less so in) Atlanta, so I took plenty of layering pieces. I would normally have taken a slightly sleeker boot, but I just wanted to be comfortable, so the Dankso booties were it (only available on eBay at this point).

What I packed:
1) lightweight cropped trench
2) draped black tee
3) leopard coat (worn on plane)
4) printed top (worn on plane, you can see the actual top I wore in this post)
5) drapey black cardigan (worn on plane)
6) white long sleeved tee
7) black leggings (worn on plane)
8) lightweight black scarf (worn on plane)
9) Converse
10) dark skinny jeans
11) Linea Pelle Dylan bag (carried on plane)
12) statement necklace (this one is Stella and Dot-no longer available, I just layered a few)
13) Dansko boots (worn on plane)

Since I wore 7 out of these 13 pieces on the plane (including the heavier pair of shoes), my bag was pretty light. Here's what I wore on the plane and to dinner out the first night:

For a day of shopping and eating:

That night, I changed my top and shoes and added a necklace for dinner out:

A second day of walking around town, including, um, more shopping and eating....

And on the flight back, I wore the exact same thing as my first travel day.

Some photos IRL:

What makes this so easy is that I had two basic outfits that I could tweak a little bit for various occasions. I definitely don't think for a four day trip that you need more than that, and I felt like I could have easily gone a few more days without needing anything more. Essentially, those two outfits were a flowy top and leggings and jeans and a tee. For traveling I layered on a scarf, sweater, and coat to my top and leggings, but it also stood on its own for dinner the night I got in and activities the day I left. By just changing the top layer and my shoes, the jeans and tee worked for casual day activities and nights out as well.

What do you think - did I pack enough or too much?

mindful purchases: trench and blouse

mindful purchases: trench and blouse

I crossed several things off of my wish list this month. Two that I've been wearing non-stop since buying are my new trench coat and white blouse.

The trench coat is from the Gap. It was $80 and I had $20 in rewards from my Gap credit card.  (here with H&M blouse, James jeans and Target wedges)

When I'm deciding on a purchase, I usually take a photo to help me decide (I turn off the sound on my phone so people don't hear camera noises coming from my dressing room!). This isn't the most flattering pic of me, but the coat looks great, so it was a yes.

The other piece I can't stop wearing is this silky white blouse from H&M ($24). Seriously, I have worn this same outfit at least 5 times over the last two weeks with different shoes and jewelry. It's simple, I feel good in it, so why not? In case you missed it, that's how the French do it!

Since I'm sharing, here's the dressing room pic of the blouse.
