is your closet for you or a past self?

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the amount of clothes in your closet, and that you don’t wear most of what you have, it’s time to align your current lifestyle with what you own. 

How much of your closet is for your current self? And how much is for a past self? In other words, does your wardrobe match your current lifestyle? 

Here’s an exercise - make a pie chart and divide it into segments based on what you spend your time doing. How much of your life are you at work? Fifty percent? Are you at home with kids 90% of your time? How often do you go to formal events? Once a year? That’s .0027% of your time. 

If you feel like really getting into it, do a quick inventory of your clothes. If you spend 50% of your time at work, do work clothes account for 50% of your wardrobe? If you used to work but now you’re home with your kids, do work clothes still account for 50%? Can you adjust what’s in your wardrobe to align better with what you actually spend your time doing? And would that mean you’d have to accept the stage of life you’re in?

Like last week’s ideas about our bodies, our identity in life is always changing. If you have clothes from your 18 year old self and your 25 year old self and your 32 year old self, can you let them go? P.P.S. If you have items that have sentimental meaning to you, by all means, keep them. But keep only the really special ones, and keep them stored out of the way so that you don’t see them when you’re trying to get dressed.
